Eternal

Eternal
by: Cynthia Leitich Smith

# of pages: 320
age range: 14+

At last, Miranda is the life of the party: all she had to do was die. Elevated and adopted by none other than the reigning King of the Mantle of Dracul, Miranda goes from high-school theater wannabe to glamorous royal fiend overnight. Meanwhile, her reckless and adoring guardian angel, Zachary, demoted to human guise as the princess’s personal assistant, has his work cut out for him trying to save his girl’s soul and plan the Master’s fast-approaching Death Day gala. In alternating points of view, Miranda and Zachary navigate a cut-throat eternal aristocracy as they play out a dangerous and darkly hilarious love story for the ages.

So this is my second book that I've read by Cynthia, and well, this is her only second book. It's weird because I love her stories but at times I really don't like how she writes them, and then at other times I think she does an amazing job writing.

Basically though, this story takes place in the same world as Tantalize, but with completely different characters. Zachary and Miranda are the main characters and they alternate perspectives by the chapter. Zach is Miranda's guardian angel and then looses her when she becomes a vamp, which happened by accident. Miranda looses herself when she becomes a vamp princess and the story revolves around Zach trying to help Miranda find humanity in herself.

The plot is pretty good, with some awesome action scenes and plot twists. But the writing is also pretty dark, there's a lot of sex references, killing (in graphic detail), drinking, etc. But I just didn't like how time skipped around, one chapter it would be a Tuesday and the next chapter it would suddenly be two weeks from Tuesday. The biggest time jump was a year.

Altogether I did enjoy the book, but I think i definitely could have enjoyed it more, I'd give it 3/5 stars.
