The Art of Buying Books - Cover love edition

Hey Everyone!

So this is a branch of my first informational post, The Art of Buying Books Part 1 , in that post I covered all of the tips and tricks of amazon shopping which can be very useful in buying books and saving money.

In this edition I'm going to cover sites that allow you to get the European covers of the books you love, for as little $$$ as possible.

Keep in mind that this will be a relatively short post because to be honest there are not many places you can go to get these covers.

So, have you ever seen a cover release of a new book and you just aren't loving it? Well, If that's the case it's always good to go on Amazon.co.uk to look at all of the UK covers of your favorite books.

Here is an image of the Amazon UK Screen for the book Wings by Aprilynne Pike

So great, you want to buy it! Only prob...you have to pay the European cost which could be double what you would normally pay for the book after you convert your money, and then add the shipping cost...eek!

So where do you go to get the book you want with the price you need? Um, book depository uk of course!

If you haven't heard of the book depository, you must learn! It is a fabulous site that ships book for FREE world wide...and their prices can be as low as Amazon's. Yes, it is a book lover's heaven, especially for those of you who don't live in the USA.

So for example, I really wanted to read Hearts at Stake (cover on the right), but I really didn't like the use cover. However, I loved the euro cover (one on left) so I went to the book depository UK and bought the UK version for $9! Which was a steal with the free shipping.

So here are some other book stores that have great shipping deals and book deals:

Better World Books (Free shipping in USA, $3.97 world wide) They have some pretty awesome deals like 5 books for $15!

Thrift Books (GREAT shipping rates!)

Rampant

Rampant
by Diana Peterfreund

# of pages: 416
Age range: 14/15 +
Rating: 4/5

Forget everything you ever knew about unicorns . . .

Real unicorns are venomous, man-eating monsters with huge fangs and razor-sharp horns. Fortunately, they've been extinct for a hundred and fifty years.

Or not.

Astrid had always scoffed at her eccentric mother's stories about killer unicorns. But when one of the monsters attacks her boyfriend—thereby ruining any chance of him taking her to the prom—Astrid finds herself headed to Rome to train as a unicorn hunter at the ancient cloisters the hunters have used for centuries.

However, at the cloisters all is not what it seems. Outside, the unicorns wait to attack. And within, Astrid faces other, unexpected threats: from the crumbling, bone-covered walls that vibrate with a terrible power to the hidden agendas of her fellow hunters to—perhaps most dangerously of all—her growing attraction to a handsome art student . . . an attraction that could jeopardize everything.

First I must applaud Mrs. Peterfuend for her creativity. Killer Unicorns? Um, cool! I've seen so many branches of fantasy lately that it's hard to find a book that really catches me off guard. This one did just that.

Rampant starts out with Astrid watching her boyfriend get stabbed by a...unicorn!? Yes, she was a bit surprised too. The story really begins when she arrives in Rome at the cloisters where she will train to become a Unicorn hunter. As Astrid learns to accept her heritage she meets a too-good-t0-be-true guy and learns some disturbing secrets of the past. Her summer begins to become even more interesting. With a surprising ending, lots of action, and a dash of romance, Rampant is a refreshingly new teen read that is so different that it just might be right.

Peterfreund delivered some surprising writing skills, as well as believable characters and dialogue that both fit the fantasy element and relatible teen issues. Some times I got a little lost in the terminology and history of the unicorn stuff, and there were a few parts of the story that dragged a little bit. But overall lit was a good read and i look forward to Peterfruend's future work.

Captivate

Captivate
by Carrie Jones

# of pages: 288
Age range: 13+
Rating: 4/5

Zara and her friends knew they hadn't solved the pixie problem for good. Far from it. The king's needs grow deeper every day he's stuck in captivity, while his control over his people gets weaker. It's made him vulnerable. And now there's a new king in town.

A turf war is imminent, since the new pixie king, Astley, is moving in quickly. Nick nearly killed him in the woods on day one, but Zara came to his rescue. Astley swears that he and Zara are destined to be together, that he's one of the good guys. Nick isn't buying it, though Zara isn't as sure -- despite herself, she wants to trust the new king. But it's a lot more than her relationship with Nick that is at stake. It's her life -- and his.

Carrie Jones really "captivated" me (haha) with her first book Need, and I am happy to say she did it again in Captivate. What makes these novel's so unique is the pixies! We combine "were's" which are people/animal shape shifters, elf's, and the pixies. It's a whole fantasy bonanza without the vampires, which is quite refreshing.

The book picks up a few months after the end of Need, and the gang is beginning to worry about an increase in the pixies that are loose in the woods. As they dig deeper into the mystery, Zara learns some disturbing things about herself and her family, ultimately she must make a choice that will change her life forever. A new character, Astley is introduced, and I couldn't help but love him. I kept thinking...Astley, Nick? Astley, no Nick, no Astley! It was great!

Plot wise we get a lot of action, but the book leaves us with a bit of a cliff-hanger. That was pretty much the only thing that bothered me about the book, I felt as though this novel was just preparing us for the next one, a lot of tension is built up but it never got introduced or solved. Other than that the writing was good, and the characters were well developed, and overall it was quite a good sequel.

I look forward to the third novel in this series. If you like this book/series, be sure to check out:

The Dark Divine: Bree Despain
Wondrous Strange: Lesley Livingston
Shiver: Maggie Stiefvater
Immortal: Gillian Shields
Evermore: Alyson Noel

Contests

Hey all,

You may have noticed that I occasionally do contest lists a few times a month for contests going on around the blogoshere. If you haven't noticed, I do, and it takes a lot of time to put together which is why I don't make them very often.

However, I've decided to be more gun-ho (gung-ho?) about blogging, which means more reading, more posts, and more memes. So I added a contest page which you can find at the top of my blog. I will try and update it as often as I can. I added a couple on there for today, but bear with me, it takes a lot of time.

So be sure to check it out!

Also only 5 days left to my Dark Divine arc and nail polish contest ends! Can you believe it!?

So if you haven't entered that, check it out! You can find the link at the top of the screen!

The Van Allen Legacy

The Van Allen Legacy
by Melissa de la Cruz

# of pages: 384
Age range: 14+
Rating: 4/5

With the stunning revelation surrounding Bliss's true identity comes the growing threat of the sinister Silver Bloods. Once left to live the glamorous life in New York City, the Blue Bloods now find themselves in an epic battle for survival. Not to worry, love is still in the air for the young vampires of the Upper East Side. Or is it? Jack and Schuyler are over. Oliver's brokenhearted. And only the cunning Mimi seems to be happily engaged.

I Love the Blue Bloods series. Even though I'm kind of over the whole vampire thing I still really enjoy the fresh and creative characters that Cruz creates in her novels. I also love how she ties real world things, and religion into her novels to make her books more urban fantasy than flat out "vampire novel",

I will admit I was a bit disappointed in Revelations, the third book because it was quite confusing, but, I am happy to say a lot gets cleared up in this novel. The book takes off almost a year after the end of Revelations with Schuyler and Oliver. I won't tell you too much because it will ruin the book but let's just say they were reunited with some old friends and new hope in built for many of the characters and their futures. Basically there was a happy ending - sort of.

As usual, I really enjoyed the enticing plot and writing, as well as my favorite characters. It bothers me sometimes how the character POV switches all the time, I feel as though Schuyler isn't even really the main character because there are so many, I wished the book focused more on her.

Overall however I thought it was a good novel to keep readers satisfied as well as answer some questions. I am eagerly awaiting, though, the fifth novel in the series currently titled Misguided Angel. I also love the covers to the novels, they are so pretty!

If you like this book/series be sure to check out:

Vampire Academy: Richelle Mead
Morganville Vampires: Rachel Caine
The immortal series: Alyson Noel
Hush, Hush: Becca Fitzpatrick
Evernight series: Claudia Gray
Luxe series: Anna Godberson

ARC Tours

I remember my first days of blogging (almost a year ago now *eep!*) two questions of many that I had thought of were:

  • What is an ARC
  • Where do you get them?
To answer the first one, and ARC stands for Advance Reader Copy, or "galley". Basically, it is a paperback copy of a book before it comes out. Most of the time the cover might be different then the finished copy and there is usually

The image on the left is a finished copy of Fallen by Lauren Kate, and the smaller image next to it was the ARC version. Of course not every version looks like this but some do, but all versions will state somewhere on the cover that it is an ARC and cannot be copied or sold.

Now, on to the second question, where do you get them? Most of the time bloggers will get ARC's from publishers to review - keep in mind that this does not happen over night. I had been blogging for five months before I got my first ARC!

But there are other ways to read arc's! Getting one from a publisher in the mail is fantastic, don't get me wrong, but for people who can't wait, here lies your solution!

Some great posts on ARC's and where you can get them are below:

But today I'm going to focus on ARC Tours, which are fantastic! So what are ARC Tours? ARC Tours are different for every site, but most commonly you sign up on the site and give your name, address, blog, etc to the person that runs the site. Then you check back consistently, and when you see and ARC listed that you would like to read you sign up for the tour in the comment section.

Now what happens is you and everyone else who signed up for the tour get places randomly in a numerical list, and the first person on the list gets shipped the ARC. You get the ARC you read it, review it, and then you get the name and address of the next person on the list and you ship it out to them. This continues all the way until the end when the last person ships the ARC back to the person who originally got it.

Sure, you have to pay for shipping, but that's usually a small price to pay to be able to read one of your favorite books way before it comes out. Plus, reviewing the ARC's is great for your blog, and if you are participating in the 2010 Debut Author Challenge, it's great help.

So let's get to the good stuff...the ARC tour blogs!!!

Before I Fall

Before I Fall
by Lauren Oliver

From ATW Tours

# of Pages: 480
Age Range: 14+
Rating: 4.5/5

What if you had only one day to live? What would you do? Who would you kiss? And how far would you go to save your own life?

Samantha Kingston has it all: the world's most crush-worthy boyfriend, three amazing best friends, and first pick of everything at Thomas Jefferson High—from the best table in the cafeteria to the choicest parking spot. Friday, February 12, should be just another day in her charmed life.
Instead, it turns out to be her last.

Then she gets a second chance. Seven chances, in fact. Reliving her last day during one miraculous week, she will untangle the mystery surrounding her death—and discover the true value of everything she is in danger of losing.

I signed up for this tour months ago, and pretty much forgot about it until I saw this package arrive in my mailbox one day. What could it be? I thought as I slowly opened it. Finally, I pulled out this beautiful shiny cover with this gorgeous face staring right at me and I couldn't help but squeal. Before I Fall, for me? Yay!

I will admit, after reading the first chapter I was a bit disappointed. The main character, Sam, well she and her friends were horrendous. They took "mean girl" to the next level. I couldn't help but think, did I really have to put up with them for the whole novel?

Answer: Not at all! By the end of the second chapter I was hooked. Sam is one of the most thoroughly developed characters I have ever read in a long time. There was so much going on in the book, I loved it! The characters were both cliched, and unique in a way that is effective for the plot, and the romance - so sweet! With an intriguing plot, excellent characters, fabulous writing, and a wonderful cover, Before I Fall is sure to be a sparkling debut.

*The only thing that bothered me really was the fact that Sam is portrayed to have darker features, like Brown eyes and dark hair. But the girl on the cover has vivid green eyes and blond hair. (what!?) As stunning as it may be, it's always been a pet peeve of mine when the cover character does not match the one in the book. It gets my mental image of the character mixed up.

So, if you loved Before I Fall like I did, be sure to check out these other awesome books:
